Blame Pfiaum, Dr. Keith Jakee, Dr. Terje Hoim Room AD 202 Nonlinearity and Entrepreneurship

Advisor/Professor: Dr. Keith Jakee

Entrepreneurship occupies a curious place in economic theory. On one hand, the importance of entrepreneurship is widely recognized, particularly as rt pertains to economic growth. However, the entrepreneur lacks a broadly accepted economic theory, and suffers from a dearth of literature on the subject. We believe that this is due to economies' heavy reliance on linear mathematical theory, which is ill-suited to capturing key features of the entrepreneurial process. In this paper, we use nonlinear mathematics to construct a model of the entrepreneur that captures the sudden destabilization of a steady state, the unpredictability of a creative action, the possibility of entrepreneurial failure, and sensitivity to small changes in environment.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

"National experts on honors colleges can name only one that is both university-affiliated and a free-standing liberal-arts institution: the Wilkes Honors College, operated by Florida Atlantic University on its Jupiter, Fla., campus. Established by the Florida Legislature in 1999, it hires its own faculty members, has autonomy over its curriculum, and focuses almost solely on the liberal arts and sciences."
--Chronicle of Higher Education, Feb. 28, 2010 ("University Honors Colleges Pitch the 'Liberal Arts Experience," by Peter Schmidt), available online

The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University, which opened in the Fall of 1999, is the first public honors institution to be built from the ground up in the United States. Its intellectual foundation is a belief in liberal arts education as the best preparation for a full and productive life. As a public institution, the Honors College offers a quality education at a small fraction of the cost of a private liberal arts education, making it an outstanding value.

The Honors College shares the Jupiter campus with the Scripps Research Institute-Florida and the Max Planck Institute, and our students are able to take advantage of incredible internship opportunities that these leading research centers can provide.

As a public institution, we open our doors to those seeking a challenging, yet affordable, learning experience equal to that of the most selective colleges and universities.

With one faculty for every ten students, classes are small, and learning is pursued in formal and informal settings. Students have the opportunity to work on research projects one-on-one with outstanding faculty holding Ph.D.'s from leading universities. Student/faculty collaborations have resulted in publications in scholarly journals and our graduates have gone on to some of the top graduate and professional programs in the country. We invite you to see some of our success stories by perusing our alumni profiles. You can also see some of our student profiles.

A number of universities offer honors programs or honors colleges. But unlike the
honors options
at almost all of these other universities, at the Wilkes Honors College you are able to take all your classes within the Honors College, and your professors are faculty whose full-time appointments are to the Honors College: we provide an all-honors education at an all-honors college.

CLEMSON

UNIVERSITY

March 3, 2010

J. Blaine Pflaum

225 Robinson Road

New Smyrna Beach, FL   32169

Dear Mr. Pflaum:

The Department of Applied Economics and Statistics is pleased to offer you a Teaching/Research Assistantship in the Master of Science program in Applied Economics and Statistics beginning in August 2010.

This assistantship pays $12,000   for the academic year (August 15-May 15).   In return, you will be expected to devote 20 hours of work per week to your work assignments. You will be expected to teach statistics laboratories as needed, and you will also be expected to assist faculty members in research projects.   The offer of this stipend also entitles you to a substantially reduced tuition.   This assistantship offer is for the 2010-2011 year: renewal is based on making satisfactory progress in your degree program and performing assistantship responsibilities satisfactorily.

You may accept this offer of a research/teaching assistant position by indicating your wish to do so on the enclosed form.   The offer will remain open until April 15, 2010, although an earlier response would be appreciated.   After this date we must reserve the right to withdraw the offer.

All graduate assistants at Clemson are required to pay a Graduate Assistant Fee in order to register for classes and be supported as a graduate assistant.   The Graduate Assistant Fee includes tuition (at a reduced rate) and a variety of other fees bundled together.   In 2009-2010, this fee was $1,020 for each academic semester and $315 for each summer term.

In addition, Clemson University requires all graduate students to demonstrate that they have some form of health insurance.   Many students choose to purchase a Clemson-sponsored plan for which the annual premium in 2009-2010 was $1,270.   All graduate assistants in 2009-2010 received a subsidy of $750 toward payment of health insurance premiums, which reduced the net cost to $520. The fee amounts and health insurance subsidy for 2010-2011 will be set by the Board of Trustees in their summer 2010 meeting.

We hope you will decide to accept our offer, and we look forward to the prospect of working with you at Clemson. If we can answer any questions, do not hesitate to contact me (864-656-3047 or e-mail at hhill@clemson.edu) or Ellen Reneke (656-5791 or e-mail at ereneke@clemson.edu).

Sincerely,

Hoke S. Hill, Jr. Department Chair

To whom it may concern,
I seldom write letters of recommendation because my students are reluctant to request them. They are aware that they will not be lavishly praised for merely adequate achievement. Nevertheless, Blaine Pflaum did ask and I was pleased to oblige. You see, I can state without reservation that Blaine is one of the few truly outstanding students that I have encountered in my twenty years of teaching honors and advanced placement courses in mathematics and physics.

Blaine Pflaum has achieved an exceptionally high grade point average in a rigorous curriculum of honors and advanced placement courses including physics, chemistry, biology, statistics and calculus among others, and currently ranks at or near the top of his graduating class. He was a key member of our District Champion Academic Team. He is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. These are surely laudable accomplishments, but not extraordinary among intelligent high school students in my experience. Here is what sets him apart: He has demonstrated creative mathematical thought, the synthesis of original concepts from familiar information. He has shown insight into the behavior of physical systems that occasionally surpasses the methods taught in my Advanced Placement Physics class. He has a talent for productive contemplation along with the maturity and tenacity required to develop his ideas fully. These are rare abilities.

I have discussed Blaine Pflaum's abilities with other science and mathematics faculty members. They unanimously concur with my evaluation of his talent and performance. An indication of the high esteem in which Blaine is held is his selection by the faculty of New Smyrna Beach High School as Outstanding Senior of the Class of 2006.

Blaine has an engaging manner and is admired and respected by faculty and students alike. He is a quiet leader whose friendship is cherished by all who know him.
I believe that Blaine Pflaum is a superior candidate for admission and is certain to be an outstanding university scholar. I recommend him without reservation.

Sincerely,
Michael S. Young Physics and Mathematics Teacher
Mathematics Department Chairman
New Smyrna Beach High School New Smyrna Beach, Florida

ESSAY:     Please briefly state what the  scholarship would mean to you and why you want to further your education – use the space provided below and additional paper if needed.

For as long as I can remember, learning has been a key feature in my life. Even when I was very young I incessantly asked questions and almost literally read anything I could get my hands on.  As I have grown older I have always endeavored to fuel this natural curiosity and today I derive even more pleasure from increasing my knowledge than ever.  To me, learning is not a duty but a privilege that has become ever more valuable as I come to realize the depth of my unawareness even as I come to know more and more.  Thus, college is the next step on my path of education.

Although I am convinced that formal education is but a part of true learning, it is an important part.  Unfortunately, my days of free education are numbered, and I and my family will have to begin making sacrifices in order to pay for my continuing schooling in college and later in graduate school.  Being awarded this scholarship would mean that I would not have to pay so dear a price for my education, and could graduate with less debt on my shoulders.
